چکیده

At TNO-FEL in The Hague, Netherlands, one of the research programs is to explore the use of ultra-wideband (UWB) electromagnetic fields in a bi-static ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system for the detection, location and identification of buried items of unexploded ordnance (e.g. land mines). In the present paper we describe the current status of the development of this system. The UWB ground-penetrating radar system is designed to operate in the frequency band from 200 MHz to 3 GHz and uses impulse radiating antennas (IRAs) as transponders to radiate and receive very short electromagnetic pulses from a short distance above the soil. The receiving IRA is similar to the transmitting IRA and is connected to a receiving unit which comprises of an attenuator; time gate switch, trigger delay generator and a sampling oscilloscope. A personal computer is used to control the equipment. In order to perform controlled radar experiments, a full-size experimenting and testing facility has been erected on the premises of TNOFEL. This note describes the GPR facility and all associated equipment.

Full-Wave Modelling of Ground-Penetrating Radars: Antenna Mutual Coupling Phenomena and Sub-Surface Scattering Processes

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology finds applications in many areas such as geophysical prospecting, archaeology, civil engineering, environmental engineering, and defence applications as a non-invasive sensing tool [3], [6], [18]. One key component in any GPR system is the receiver/transmitter antenna. Desirable features for GPR antennas include efficient radiation of ultra-wideband pul...

Compact Ultra - Short Pulse Fuzing Antenna Design and Measurements

We consider here antemas that could be usefid as part of a fize radar for penetrating munitions. The concept requires radiating an ultra-short pulse using an antenna with maximum gain and a compact design. Both lens and reflector Impulse Radiating Antennas (IRAs) are recommended as suitable candidates for this purpose. We summarize the properties of these antennas, and we describe two measureme...

Low-cost Vector Network Analyzer for Biomedical Applications

A low-cost and portable vector network analyzer (VNA) which covered operating frequency between 1MHz to 3GHz is used for vector reflection coefficient and standing wave ratio (swr) of the various microstrip antennas. This paper presents measurements of various ultra wideband (uwb) microstrip antennas for applications in biomedical field. Selection of antenna is an important key for detection of...

Sensor and Simulation Notes Note 506 January 2006 A Frequency Selective Surface Used as a Broadband Filter to Pass Low-Frequency UWB while Reflecting X–Band Radar

Airborne ultra wideband (UWB) impulse-radiating antennas (IRAs) present an especially large radar cross section to X–band radar. To mitigate this problem, we have numerically and experimentally investigated the use of a frequency selective surface (FSS) as a broadband filter to reflect X–band radar while transmitting lower-frequency UWB signals without loss or dispersion. We present here result...
